R. D. Harris, 93, died June 25, 2017 in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Mr. Harris was born in Checotah, Oklahoma and moved to Port St. Lucie in 1982 coming from Tampa, Florida.
He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WWII and was ordained a minister on January 14, 1948 and ordained a bishop on May 13, 1954, serving in the ministry for 69 years. His passion for life was his ministry; it meant the most to him. He was pastor at five churches, retiring from the Palm Vista Church of God where he later came back as an Associate Pastor. He worked for 21 years in administrative work in the Church of God where he was the state overseer in Missouri, Iowa, and New York. R.D. was also the Youth Director in Illinois and Washington, Evangelism Director in Florida for 4 years and also served on the Florida State Council for Church of God. He enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Karen Harris of Port St. Lucie, FL; daughter, Sharon Hooper of Homosassa, FL; sons, Marvin Harris of Tulsa, OK, Thurman Harris of Callahan, FL and Carl Harris of Phoenix, AZ; daughter, Marilyn Whaley of Fort Pierce, FL; step-daughter, Joyce Thacker of Fort Pierce, FL; brothers, Thurman Harris and Paul Harris; sisters, Rachel Quick, Evelyn Pope, Marie Purin and Louise Tapley; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pauline Harris, sister, Clara Faulks, son, Daniel Harris, daughter, Debra Harris and great-grandson, Ryan Harris.
Services: Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2017 from 12:00pm-1:00pm with a service to follow at 1:00pm at the Palm Vista Church of God, Fort Pierce. Burial will follow at White City Cemetery.
