Reine Nicole Reid

January 6, 1943 — February 15, 2022

Reine Nicole Reid was born January 6, 1943, to Pierre and Georgette Dougé in Haiti.

Reine, 79, valiantly battled cancer, undergoing weekly chemotherapy for the last ten years. Even so, as always, Reine remained positive about every aspect of life. She relied upon her strong faith to squeeze out and appreciate every precious moment. Reine remained resolute despite complications the last six months, four emergency surgeries requiring hardware to fix both arms and both legs. Reine continued her daily prayers and remained thankful through it all.

Reine sunset the morning of February 15, 2022, and rests peacefully with her Lord and Savior. Reine also lives in the hearts and minds of the so many she touched near and far, even in her dying days.

The legacy Reine leaves - an amazing, selfless woman who helped others whenever and wherever possible, even strangers. Reine was the nucleus of a huge, extended family spanning generations and in many different places. With her iPad and two phones (home and cell) ringing nonstop, from morning to night, Reine stayed in touch with everyone, everywhere. She knew everyone’s birthday and their remote connection to others without ever skipping a beat. Reine always made the time to counsel others.

Just like her 10-year cancer battle, from an early age, Reine demonstrated a keen ability of putting others first while facing adversity with grace. One example, April 26, 1963, Reine’s father (Pierre) and uncle (Rossini) were rounded up by dictatorship government officials, never to be seen or heard from again. The two were presumably tortured and executed. The Dougés, 15 children between the two families, were now without father figures and providers. Reine rose to fulfill the true meaning of her name in French - Queen. Reine became the matriarch at an age where many have yet to mature or find their way in life.

New responsibilities and reality replaced lifelong plans and dreams. Reine, who attended the prestigious St. Rose de Lima school for girls, was to start Montpellier medical school in France. However, the likelihood of further persecution stripped that away along with any opportunity or time to mourn. Reine put aside her pain and used all means to organize an exodus from Haiti for all younger siblings and cousins.

The United States was her family’s lifeboat. Reine stressed the value of education as the greatest equalizer and had been at the top of her class year-after-year in Haiti. In America, despite trauma from the unspeakable horror, responsibility for herself plus others, moving to a strange new land and English not being her primary language, Reine earned her college and advanced degrees, all with high honors - Bachelor and Master’s in Education, plus accounting. Reine understood the importance of setting an example for the others.

Reine’s passion for education led her to become a teacher. She taught multiple languages (French, Spanish, Latin) at the college and or high school levels for years. Reine, who became an American citizen, also taught English as a Second Language (ESL) to fellow immigrants and French Literature at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Reine finished her career at Bethesda’s prestigious Walt Whitman High School after teaching there for 18 years before retiring.

In 1967, Reine married her childhood sweetheart - Raymond Reid. But for her passing, they would celebrate 55 years of marriage this October. It is a true love story that gives Raymond tremendous pride in the fact they never had a single argument that entire time. The two, who grew up around the corner from one other in Haiti, always worked together to find solutions. Raymond, an Environmental Engineer and Civil Engineer, ultimately became a Regional Advisor for the World Health Organization. Together, they lived in or traveled to at least 19 countries of the Caribbean, Europe, South America, North America, and Africa. The two cherished one another and found happiness so long as they were together.

Reine and Raymond have three boys (Reginald, Raymond, Jr., and Rafael) and their cousin Frantz Pinthiere who grew up in the home as a brother and fourth musketeer. All became successful men. Reine sacrificed to create opportunities for them she herself did not have. One example, music lessons and the ability to play the piano. Reginald, the oldest, a software engineer, graduated from John Hopkins with a degree in International Economics. Raymond, Jr., earned degrees (Bachelor and Law) from the University of Florida then served both as an assistant state attorney and an assistant general counsel then later joined a prestigious private law firm as a partner. Rafael, a software architect, graduated from the University of Maryland (Mechanical Engineering) and continued to the University of Loughborough (United Kingdom) where he earned a master’s in Computer Integrated Manufacturing. Frantz graduated from the University of Maryland (Bachelor in Fire Science | Master’s Environmental Management) and serves as a Battalion Chief in a large county, fire department. As to grandchildren, Reine’s subtle influence led Rafael to meet and marry Joanne Philippeaux. The two have been happily married for more than a decade and have given Raymond and Reine two precious grandchildren: Sebastian-Omar and Sophia Nicole Reid.

Even through her dying breath, whether here, in Haiti or elsewhere, there are countless other people and children for whom Reine cared for or paid for their schooling. Numerous Western Union transfers to ensure basic needs such as a place to live, food, and an education.

Including Reine, there were nine siblings in her family as follows: brothers: George, Reginald (Dorothy Dougé) Eric (Danielle) and Francois (Kathy); Alex (Mirielle); Sisters: Marie-Francoise K. Dhansis (Joseph), Frederique Schutt-Aine (Joseph-Claude), Dominique Harris. She is preceded in death by brothers: George and Reginald. Her cousins totaled six and were Maxime, Ephrosene, Rosine, Rodini, Magalie and Judith.

In Jamaica, and at other times, Javelyne Morisseau Thomann “Reid” grew up in the home with the boys but most recently helped care for Reine around the clock in her dying days along with Danielle Dougé. Reine also had her beloved aunt Germaine who she helped in Haiti when her brother was taken and in turn assisted Reine during the last years.

Reine displayed fierce determination and love in the moments leading to her passing. Reine, who needed to hear from all three children, passed within one minute after contact with her eldest son.
