Richard J. Sommer
Richard James Sommer (Dick), 76, went to be with God on April 9, 2014. Dick died at home with his family by his side, after a long and brave battle with cancer. He was born to Theodore and Gertrude” Burke” Sommer on May 11, 1937 in Jersey City N.J.
Dick was educated at Saint Andrew School and Bayonne High School, both in Bayonne N.J. Dick joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17, and served aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt CVA 42 during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, Dick was employed for 18 years with Huls America Inc. and retired in 1995.
He was an active member of the American Legion Post # 261 in Piscataway N.J. and served as the Post Commander.
To say Dick was a New York sports team fan would be a understatement. He was a Loyal follower of the New York Giants and New York Mets. Upon his retirement and moving to Florida, Dick followed the St. Lucie Mets, and was a season ticket holder.
Dick is survived by his wife of 30 years, Carol Sommer (nee Pushie), his daughter Dawn Dix (Larry) of Readsboro, Vt. His son, Dean Sommer (partner Iris Rose) of Dingmans Ferry, Pa., and daughter, Dale Sommer of Lady Lake, Fl., grandchildren Michael, Colleen, Daniel, Christopher, Brianna, Johnny, Megan, Noreen, Darren (his wife Breann, and great-grandaughter Lillieonna. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his brothers Charles and Theodore and Sister Margaret Felle.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday April 21, family will receive friends from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. at 1:00 p.m.. Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. followed by U.S. Navy Military Honors.
