Robert Hammond Forsman
November 2, 1938-September 8, 2015
Robert was born on November 2, 1938 in Jersey City, NJ, then came to Fort Pierce when he was a toddler. He attended local schools and was a proud member of the Dan McCarty High School Class of 1955. After receiving his bachelor’s degree at the University of Florida (Go Gators!) and serving in the Army, he returned to teach at his hometown alma mater. He spent 25 years as a teacher and administrator at Florida Institute of Technology before completing his career with seven years at Fort Pierce Central High School. He retired in 2005.
As a young man, he was an avid sailor and held a number of leadership posts in the Intracoastal Sailing Club. He also served the sailing community as Assistant Scoutmaster for the Sea Scout Ship Edwin Binney. He was passionate about his Celtic ancestry and hosted his fellow Scots at highland games in Florida and around the country. He presided as Florida Convener of Clan Maclean, USA and served as Vice President for several years. He made two trips to Scotland and was thrilled to join other Maclean bagpipers at Duart Castle in Scotland. His renowned weapons display attracted hundreds and gave him the opportunity to teach and share his heritage with others. Through the years, he enjoyed tennis, fishing, and dancing as a member of Sunshine Strollers.
He married a fellow teacher in 1969 and brought up three fine sons. He is survived by Kathleen Sullivan Forsman, his wife of 46 years, and sons Robert Jr. of Sugar Hill, Georgia, Jeffrey of Fort Pierce, and David of Fort Pierce; in-laws Mike and Heather Sullivan, Ann and Al Oram, and Ula Sullivan, as well as eleven nieces and nephews and their spouses and children.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 from 5-6 PM with a memorial service to follow at 6:00 PM at Haisley Funeral Home.
