Robert Meyer

January 2, 1925 — July 15, 2016

Robert Meyer, M.D., 91, passed away on July 15, 2016, in the company of his family. He was a Veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict, when he served as an LTJG, US Navy Medical Corps.

Meyer was a graduate of the University of Rochester (NY), earned his M.D. from Syracuse University Medical School (NY), and completed his Residency in Urology at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (MA), where he was also a Teaching Fellow at Harvard University Medical School. He earned Board Certification in Urology in 1961. He was Clinical Professor of Urology at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse (NY), and a Urology Consultant for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Syracuse for 33 years, where he cared for many Veterans, especially those in financial need.

He was in the private practice of Urology in Syracuse, NY, from 1958-1977 and then in Ithaca, NY, from 1977-1995, where he served as Chief of Surgical Staff at Cayuga Medical Center, Ithaca, NY. He was the author of numerous professional research articles in Urology before his retirement in 1995.

In 1996, he moved to Florida permanently to reside in the Meadowood Community and to enjoy the Meadowood Golf and Tennis Golf for 20 years. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Veterans Day Weekend.

But retirement was not limited to gardening, golf, travel, family, and woodworking. Meyer was also passionate about supporting professional medical associations. He belonged to many, such as the American Urological Association (AUA), the American Medical Association (AMA), and his favorite, the Northeastern Section of the American Urological Association (NS-AUA), in which he held many Executive Offices, including Scientific Program Chair.

In retirement, he became the NS-AUA Historian for 13 years, and with his wife, “Maggie,” co-authored two medical history books, “Urologists of Two Nations: A History of the Northeastern Section 1948-1998” (1998), and “History of the Northeastern Section of the AUA: Waterways” (2002). Robert did the medical research, photography, and art, and Maggie did the writing.

As a result of 13 years of research in medical history, Meyer earned the NS-AUA Distinguished Service Award for “Innovative and Invaluable Contributions to the Section” (1998) along with Maggie’s award for “Outstanding Editorial Contributions.” Later, on May 18, 2011, at a private black-tie banquet in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Washington, MD, beneath portraits of the Presidents of the United States, Meyer was presented the American Urological Association’s William P. Didusch Art and History Award “For outstanding photographic documentation and written contributions to urological history in the United States and Canada.” Didusch was a urological medical illustrator who founded the AUA’s Urology Museum in Linthicum, MD.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Dietz Meyer, Ph.D., four children, Dr. Steve Meyer of Ithaca, NY, Andrew Meyer of Fayetteville, NY, Dan Meyer of Encinitas, CA, Lisa Bobbette of Fayetteville, NY, nine grandchildren, a sister Phyllis Simons of Ithaca, NY, and a cousin Myra Fisher of Indianapolis, IN.

Memorial contributions may be made to the NS-AUA Foundation, Mr. Drew Shifflet, Executive Director, 1000 Corporate Blvd., Linthicum, MD 21090.

This 501 (c) (3) Foundation provides scholarships and grants to newly-graduated physicians in training to become the next generation of Urologists.
