Roger “Coach” Wrench, 82, died November 6, 2007 in Ft. Pierce, Florida.Roger was born May 4, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY. He served in the Navy in WWII and was stationed in Miami, FL. He graduated from the University of Miami in 1953 with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and was captain of the University of Miami basketball team his senior year. In 1950, he married Ann Askew of Miami Beach.In 1953 he took his first job in Folkston, GA, coaching high school basketball. Roger moved to Hilliard, FL in 1957. There he coached Hilliard High School to win the 1963 Florida High School State Basketball Championship.Roger came to Fort Pierce in 1963 to coach basketball and to teach at Dan McCarty High School. He also coached track and assisted with football and baseball. In 1970, Coach Wrench transferred from Dan McCarty to become the first boys basketball coach at Fort Pierce Central High School. Roger retired from teaching in 1984.He owned Ann’s Nursery for the next 11 years selling plants in Saint Lucie and Indian River County.Roger is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ann; his daughter Frances Millar of Port St. Lucie; his son and wife Roger (Buzzy), Jr. and Jennie of Andalusia, AL, and his son James of Fort Pierce; his grandsons, Brett Millar of Huntsville, AL, Daniel Wrench of Fort Pierce, James Wrench and Taylor Wrench of Nashville, TN, and 3 great-grandchildren, Andrew Millar, Brandt and Hailey Wrench.Memorial contributions may be made to the Treasure Coast Hospices, 1201 SE Indian Street, Stuart, FL 34997.Services: Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2007 from 4:30-5:30 PM with a service to follow at 5:30 PM at Haisley Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Pineview Cemetery in Folkston, GA.
