Roy Myron Whitehead

April 23, 1930 — February 11, 2017

Roy Myron Whitehead, 86, of Ft. Pierce, Florida, died peacefully Saturday, February 11, 2017, at Treasure Coast Hospice House of Port St. Lucie with his beloved wife of 66 years, Rosella (Rosee) Bolton Whitehead, and their family at his side. He was born April 23, 1930, in Carlos City, Indiana, to Lloyd and Alma Whitehead.

He is survived by his children Kathryn Whitehead, Tampa, FL; Roy and Rhonda Whitehead, Seattle, WA; Sherry and David Berent, Demorest, GA; Ronald and Terry Whitehead, Jupiter, FL; and Lloyd Whitehead, Winston-Salem, NC; 13 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; sisters Nina Moore, Indianapolis, IN, and Carolyn Lafever and husband Ed, Cambridge, IN; and in-laws Tom and Barbara Bolton, Lynn, IN. He was preceded in death by son Phillip Whitehead, grandson Parker Whitehead, and brothers Robert Whitehead and Ronald Whitehead.

During his life, Mr. Whitehead was a noted real estate developer in the Midwest and Southeast. He was president of The Hilton Head Company in South Carolina in the 1970s and later developed several condominiums on Hutchinson Island, FL. He held an avid interest in local affairs and government, as evidenced by his frequent letters to the editor. He served as commodore of the Ft. Pierce Yacht Club and founded the Treasure Coast Youth Sailing Foundation.

Mr. Whitehead was a private pilot for many years. He built his first sailboat in the garage of his home in Germantown, OH, in the mid-1960s, which led to a lifelong passion for sailing and boating. In retirement, he became a prolific writer, chronicling the couple’s many boating experiences, his reflections on life, and biographical stories of his early life. He was well known for his ever-present sense of humor and his practical jokes.

Arrangements for a celebration of life will be announced.

Please make contributions in Mr. Whitehead’s memory to the Treasure Coast Youth Sailing Foundation, P.O. Box 1783, Ft. Pierce, FL 34954.
