Ruth B Cooke

August 2, 1936 — March 28, 2025

Okeechobee, FL

Ruth B Cooke, 88, of Port St. Lucie, FL passed away peacefully March 28, 2025.

Born Ruth Joan Bouchey on August 2, 1936, in Standish Maine to Doris and Carroll Bouchey. She graduated from Deering High School in Portland, Maine. Ruth married John D Cooke Jr on April 22, 1956, in Limington, Maine.

They moved to a farm in Dracut, Massachusetts, and started a family. She had 5 daughters, always trying to hopefully, to get that boy. In 1970, the family moved to Ft Pierce, Florida and lived in the area called Lakewood Park right on a lake. There you would always find Ruth floating on her raft catching the rays from the sun.

In 1994, they moved west of Ft Pierce to a farm with acreage so her husband could have a farm again. She made sure the property had a pool so she could enjoy floating in the water, soaking up the sunshine.

When John started having health issues, the farm became too much for him to take care of, so they sold it and built a house in The Cascades in St. Lucie West in 2001. Instead of putting any nice upgrades in the brand-new house, she opted for the upgrade of a pool, in the backyard, so she could float around and catch the sunshine.

In 2013, John suffered a stroke and was placed in a nursing home. Ruth visited him faithfully, weather permitting, every day to feed him his lunch until his death.

She sold that house and spent her remaining years at Watercrest Assisting Living - and yes it had a pool!

She joined Beta Sigma Phi in December 1970. She was an active member for over 50 years. As a responsible and friendly member, she has never missed a meeting in 25 years. She helped on all committees and was Woman of the year and Valentine Queen many times.

As part of her commitment to the community she loved, Ruth was a member of the Moose Lodge and First United Methodist Church of Port St Lucie.

Once her youngest started school she returned to work as a secretary for Treasure Oil in 1974 until they relocated. Ruth, then, went to work for Gracewood Groves in 1991 and remained with them until she retired in June 2000.

She will be lovingly remembered by her 5 daughters: Cindy Reddish of Palm City, FL, Nancy Dennis of Port St Lucie, FL, Gail Hart of Okeechobee, FL, Caroline and Jaye Cooke of Ft. Pierce, FL. She will be deeply missed by her 3 Brothers, Paul, Robert, and Carl of Maine and 2 Sisters, Jeanette Decker of Maine and Jean DeGroat of New York.

She was predeceased by her parents, Doris and Carroll Bouchey of Standish Maine, sister, Maureen Munson of New Hampshire and her beloved husband of 62 years, John D Cooke Jr
