Thomas “Tommy” Owen Matthews passed away on May 04, 2024, in Fort Pierce, Florida.
Tommy was born on October 15, 1943, in Dos Palos, California to Thomas and Marion (Boyer) Matthews. Tommy grew up in Fort Pierce and graduated from Dan McCarty High School, class of 1962, where he played basketball and lettered in football.
Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served from 1962 to1965. After his service, he worked for the USDA as a Crop Inspector. He then went to work for Winn-Dixie, where he was the Meat Market Manager until his retirement, and then worked at Bob and Tod’s in the meat department.
Tommy enjoyed fishing to the extent of tying his own flies. He was a member of the Moose Club, Eagles, and the American Legion. He was also a contributor to Boys Town, St. Labre Indian School, and Veterans Organizations.
Tommy is survived by his sister, Joyce Matthews Randall of Fort Pierce, FL; his nieces, Stephanie (Jeff) Hoffmann Montpetit of Fort Pierce, FL, Shawn Hoffmann of Copperas Cove, TX, and Kristi Randall of Boston, MA; his great-nephew Brenden (Ashlyn) Hoffmann and great-niece Daelin Hoffmann, both of Copperas Cove, TX and great-niece Michaela Montpetit and great-nephews Taylor Montpetit and Christopher (Pher) Montpetit, all of Fort Pierce, FL; and his great-grandnephew, Drake Perreault of Copperas Cove, TX. He was preceded in passing by his father, Thomas Matthews and mother, Marion VanWinkle.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 25, 2024, from 12 PM to 2 PM with an honor guard detail at 12:15 PM at the Haisley Reception Center (3015 Okeechobee Road, Fort Pierce, FL 34947).
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes guests to bring a covered dish to the Celebration of Life in the Haisley Reception Center.
