Dr. Thomas I. Sharpe

October 31, 1918 — November 25, 2012

Dr. Thomas Isaac Sharpe, son of the late Thomas S. Sharpe and Amelda V. Sharpe, was born in Edenton, North Carolina.

He became a member of Kadosh A.M.E. Zion Church of Edenton at an early age and was a supportive member, serving on many boards and committees of the church.

Thomas converted to Catholicism in 2006 and remained a devoted member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church of Port St. Lucie, Florida, until his death.

Thomas was married to the late Cornelia Jefferson who preceded him in death in 1989. They had no children, but reared a foster son, Darnell, and his daughter Monica Leary.

After forty years of teaching Mathematics on the high school and university levels, Thomas retired from the University of North Carolina at Elizabeth City.
In 1991, he married the late Dorothy T. Walker of Port St. Lucie, where they made their home.

Thomas departed this life on Sunday, November 25, 2012 and is survived by step-daughters Bettye-Jo Mayo of Georgia and Jimmye C. Walker of Maryland; his foster son Darnell Sharpe of Virginia and foster granddaughter Monica Leary of North Carolina. Thomas had four step-grandchildren, eight step-great grandchildren and three foster-great-grandchildren.
He wishes to acknowledge his “special sons and daughters, Cheryl Mattison, Mandy Rowan, Susie Carter, George Roberts, Percy Foxwell and John and Kathi Harris.
