Urban (Joe) Matthews Jr.,

Urban (Joe) Matthews Jr., age 74, passed away 28 April 2023.  He died peacefully in his sleep with his wife of 54 years, Elaine, by his side. He is survived by four children; Kathaleen Mitchell of Vero Beach, FL; Kristen (Thomas) Wynne of Clarksville, TN; Darren (Jennifer) Matthews of Port St. Lucie, FL; and Robert (Randi) Matthews of Twin City, GA. Joe & Elaine shared a great deal of love and pride in their children who went on to bless them with thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Joe had three brothers, John (Kay) Matthews, Michael (Susan, decd) Matthews, Pat (Claire) Matthews and a sister Theresa Matthews. His nieces and nephews are too numerous to name but were very much loved.

He was greeted in heaven by his daughter Kathryn (Katie) Reed; his parents, Urban and Loretta Matthews; in-laws, Frank and Helen Ford; and his sister, Susan Stephenson.

Working to provide for his family, setting an example of a strong work ethic, and getting the job done right was extremely important to Big Joe. Some of his best years were spent at Big Red Tomato Packers, where he was a hard worker who earned the respect of his bosses, coworkers, and employees.   In his final years, he worked at Southern Oaks Middle school in the cafeteria. He enjoyed making delicious meals for the students, even if it sometimes meant getting reprimanded for adding or subtracting spices. After his retirement, he continued his cooking passion by taking over in his kitchen. When he wasn’t trying to “outcook” his wife he was busy supervising and overseeing her cooking.

Joe loved the outdoors. His wife is quoted as saying “I always wanted an outdoors man. I just didn’t know that once the babies started coming that I wouldn’t get to go. So be careful what you pray for.” Hunting and fishing were two of his favorite pastimes. His love for the river started as a child, fishing with his father and his grandfather. He often went there to pray, discuss his troubles with the Lord, and find peace. Joe’s family, neighbors and friends often enjoyed fish for dinner because of his skill and luck on the river.

Joe was a great husband, father, mentor, and friend. He was always willing to help others, whether it be a loan, a ride, providing advice, or by lending a listening ear. Laughter was often heard in his home as he enjoyed visits from “the kids”, friends and family. He treasured telling stories, diving, fishing, shucking oysters and sharing a good meal with his family.  He was happy and knew the Lord blessed him his whole life. He was looking forward to his personal visit with the Lord.

His memorial services will be held at Haisley Funeral Home, Fort Pierce on Saturday, 20 May 2023 at 1030. An online guest book may be signed at www.haisleyfuneralhome.com
