Mr. Whitaker was born in Asheville, North Carolina and moved to Port St. Lucie in 1961.
He was employed with St. Lucie County for 23 years. He enjoyed fishing and reading and was an avid New York Yankees and Green Bay Packers fan.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Cathy Whitaker of Port St. Lucie, FL; sons, Joseph M. of Port St. Lucie, FL and Johnny of Houston, TX; brother, James Whitaker of Roseland, FL; and 4 grandchildren.

Services: A private celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2011.
