Virginia Jean Shanahan Shippy, PhD., Port St Lucie, Florida

Dr. Virigina Shanahan Shippy, beloved wife, stepmother, grandmother, sister, teacher, and friend left this life on May 28, 2023 after a brief illness. She was born December 10, 1941 in Yonkers, NY. The third child of Leslie and Ella Decker Shanahan.

Dr. Shippy graduated from Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, NY, SUNY Cortland (B.S. and M.S.) and SUNY Albany, (PhD).

She taught elementary grades in Groton, NY and Sidney, NY and was on the faculty of the education department at SUNY Oneonta for 22 years. She also taught as an adjunct at SUNY Binghamton.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Jensen Beach, FL and sang in the choir and performed with the Trinity Ringers. She served for many years as a member and president of the Dutton S. Peterson Library in Odessa, NY, a member of the Board of Directors of RSVP in Schuyler County and as Chairman of The Chaplaincy Committee at Schuyler Hospital.

She was predeceased by her husband James Duane Shippy in 2022. She is survived by her brother, Leslie Shanahan (Sue) and sisters, Nancy Heldman and Alice Shanahan, step children Susan Esslinger (Tim), Robin Emm (Jim) and James E. Shippy (Judy) and by grandchildren Brian Bellan (Hillary), Katlin Budynas (Daniel), Alex Shippy and Michael Emm and two great grandchildren, Ellison and Will Bellan.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dutton S. Peterson Memorial Library in Odessa, NY or to the Schuyler County Veterans Memorial in Odessa, NY 14869.
