Dr. William H. Meyer, Jr., 89, died November 3, 2016 in Port Saint Lucie, Florida.
Dr. Meyer was born in Schenectady, New York and resided in Poughkeepsie, New York until college. He was a graduate of Union College, Schenectady, New York where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. After graduating from Albany Medical School, he completed his internship at Jackson Memorial Hospital, in Miami, Florida and residency at the University of Miami Medical School. He moved his family to Fort Pierce in 1961 to open his practice in vascular surgery. He was certified by the American Board of Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Before retiring 14 years ago, he served eight years on the Board of Governors for American College of Surgeons. In 1983 he was president of the Florida Association of General Surgeons. He was also past president of the Florida State Surgical Society. Locally, he was a past president of the Saint Lucie County-Okeechobee Medical Society, past Chief of Staff of Fort Pierce Memorial Hospital, past Chief of Surgery of Lawnwood Regional Medical Center, past Chief of Surgery of HCA Medical Center of Port Saint Lucie and the Vascular Lab director at those hospitals as well. Along with many years of service to professional organizations, he also contributed to the field of medical research, authoring a dozen scientific papers.
Dr. Meyer was active in the community as well. He was the past president of the Fort Pierce Rotary Club from 1962-1971. He was also a long-time member of Indian River Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his medical practice and community involvement, Dr. Meyer enjoyed growing beautiful orchids and raising cattle on his farm in upstate New York.
He was predeceased by his son, Scott. Survivors include his beloved wife Cora; son, Todd Meyer; daughter, Susan (Greg) McDole; grandchildren, Tracey Somera, Lindsey Payne, Morgan Ketterman, Cory Grimshaw, and Ross Meyer; five great grandchildren; sister, Elaine Raymond; niece, Leslie Raymond and nephew, William Raymond.
Services will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at Indian River Presbyterian Church, Fort Pierce.
