William Howard Turner

July 22, 1925 — July 14, 2024

Fort Pierce

William Howard Turner was born in Cobb County, Georgia, on July 22, 1925, and passed away in Fort Pierce, Florida, on July 14, 2024, a week before his 99th birthday. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 67 years, Helen Jane Ridenour Turner. He is also predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Paul McConnell, by his brother and sister-in-law, John Thomas and Louise Turner, by Janie’s two sisters and their husbands, Mary Lou and Roy Arthur Marshall and Betty and Jacques Sappington, and by his daughter-in-law, Jan (JJ) Jones-Turner.

Howard is survived by his three children Russell (Sandy), Richard, and Cindy (Rick Clark), by his four grandchildren, Kelvin, Malinda, Jonathan, and Jordan (Jordan), by two great granddaughters, Janie and Sophie, by six nieces and nephews (Art, Susan, Gayle, Linda, Doug, and John), and by his Aunt Marion Compton.

Howard grew up on his parents’ farm in Cobb County, near his Grandpa Compton’s home and farm. For the rest of his life, he fondly remembered his early years in “the house on the hill,” playing with his relatives, roaming the farm, and fishing in the creek. His love of the outdoors remained throughout his life, as he enjoyed camping with Janie, fishing, and taking long walks whenever possible.

Howard served in the Navy in World War II, and later built and operated a service station in Georgia. After moving to Florida, he ultimately retired from a 25-plus year career with Sears Roebuck.

In Fort Pierce, Howard was a long-time member of Indian River Presbyterian Church and the American Legion and volunteered at the Navy Seals Museum. He made many friends at Lake Forest Park where he enjoyed walking the grounds and working on jigsaw puzzles.

Howard always held his family closest to his heart and loved them all. He will be laid to rest with Janie in Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia

It was not in Howard’s character to ask for anything for himself, but if you would like to make a donation in his memory in lieu of flowers, you may send it to the Georgia National Cemetery.
