Wilma Hart Cowles Stephenson
(Wilma) Hart Stephenson, 80, died January 8, 2020, in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Mrs. Stephenson was a lifelong resident of Fort Pierce, Florida. She attended Dan McCarty High School in Fort Pierce, Florida, and went on to graduate from Florida State University with her B.A. in English Literature. She taught English in the St. Lucie County School System at Dan McCarty, Fort Pierce Central, and Westwood High Schools. After her retirement, she taught Adult Education at Indian River State College.
Mrs. Stephenson was active in the community and was a member of the local Elks Lodge, Backus Museum and also volunteered at the St. Lucie County Historical Museum. Her hobbies were traveling, listening to local live music, gardening, and playing piano.
She is survived by her son, Michael Hankins and Monica Shellbeck of Port St. Lucie, FL; brother, Dan Cowles of Cumming, GA; sisters, Doris Poodry of Buffalo, NY, and Mollie DeHart of North Miami, Florida; grandchildren, Daniel Hankins, Brendan Hankins and Jenna Hankins all of Lawrenceville, GA; Isabella Shellbeck of Port St. Lucie, FL and Amanda Shellbeck of Tallahassee, FL; and great-grandchild, Marissa Mair of Lawrenceville, GA; stepdaughter, Crystal Stephenson Morris of Davidson, NC and her children, Michael & Nicole Morris and stepdaughter, Rhoda Mastronardi of Bedford, TX and her children, Garrett & Galen Gant. She was preceded in death by her father, Frank (Pete) Cowles, mother, Wilma Cooper Cowles, husband, Charles Stephenson, son, Steven Hankins, and brother Harley Cowles.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2020 from 5-9 PM at the Elks Lodge, Fort Pierce.
